Innovative internet-based lessons are here! Private instrument lessons over the internet have traditionally reflected in-person lessons with instructor and student interacting only during their lesson time. However, most of the learning that happens for students takes place OUTSIDE of the lesson.
What sets lessons with Amanda apart from other online instructors are her innovations for:
how students interact with their lesson materials at their own pace with their own custom website
ways for students to perform with others with duets/trios and live-streamed concerts
access to their instructor whenever they need help beyond their current abilities
The mission of Amanda's music lesson approach is whole-person education with the ultimate goal of self-efficacy through the Gradual Release Model. By identifying efficient practice techniques and realistic goal-setting through designing our lessons collaboratively, students take responsibility for their progress and thrive beyond their instrument instruction. Whether the goals start out to learn how to play simple songs or evolve into creating recording and video projects, students are able to go at their own pace through custom-designed synchronous and asynchronous materials. Her experience and student retention rate is enhanced by her own continued professional development as a dedicated lifelong-learner!

Lesson formats
Webcam lessons are expanding into formats that work with ever-changing schedules and the modern student. The following formats are the ones that are offered through Amanda B Johnson's online lesson studio.
Click each description below for further information about each lesson format:
All of Amanda's students are encouraged to perform with livestream concerts! The stage is our usual Zoom classroom while the audience watches and interacts with us on YouTube Live through an invite-only link. After the showcase, the unlisted link can be sent to family and friends that missed out. Performance is an important stage in musical learning but is not required in this manner. We also have duet/trio recording & video opportunities, solo livestream showcases (for those who are ready to perform more than just 1 song at once for their own friends & family), and solo recordings for permanent performances.
Policies - Billing & Cancellations
Whichever format of lessons the student is following, there are clear policies to insure that the learning process can continue seamlessly for the consideration and time of students and instructor alike.
Students on Amanda's lesson roster are billed according to their format and do not have weeks that we skip so they may stay on the roster. Should a student need to take a break for a vacation, focus on other activities, life events, or have a bit more time to practice before getting back onto the roster, the student is required to give 1-week's notice so that Amanda can culminate the lesson website notes and activities and cease billing for the week of vacation or extended discontinuation.
When lesson packages run out, the timeslot opens up until a new purchase is made. Students will be reminded when their lesson package runs out, even if they are on autopay.
What if Amanda cancels or is on vacation?
It is extremely rare when Amanda needs to cancel a lesson without notice. However, she is human! If she cancels a live webcam lesson with more than 24 hours notice, she will either reschedule for another day/time the same week or will not charge for that week with no asynchronous materials posted. However, if she cancels with less than 24 hours notice, she will not charge for that week AND will provide asynchronous materials for that week at no charge.
For the weeks that Amanda will be on vacation, she will give at least 1-week's notice (she likes to give 2-4 weeks) and not charge students for that week. She will not provide asynchronous materials or live webcam lessons for any student during her vacation weeks but is happy to answer questions about music or future scheduling during that time. Generally, Amanda tries to take vacation times around major US holidays (since most students will want to be free to enjoy their own breaks) and transitional times (like New Year's, summer vacation, and back to school).
Billing
All music lessons are billed through the lesson platform that initially connect students to Amanda; she is under contract with each platform to not take direct payment from students and follows this policy strictly.
If there are any issues with re-purchasing lesson packages please contact the platform directly.
Should you have difficulty contacting customer service of your chosen connection platform, Amanda will gladly contact them on your behalf to check in and support the process.
Cancellations for lessons
Expand the description below for each format's policy.
Format A
Format A lessons are completely asynchronous so students will be able to learn at their own pace. Due to this reason, any student who choose to solely learn via Format A will be billed weekly until Amanda is given at least 1 week's notice to discontinue to allow for culminating materials to be made available on the website. If less than 1 week's notice is given, students are still billed for the week without refund but are given culminating materials so they can continue practicing on their own before studying with an instructor again.
Weekly cancellations of Format A are not possible if wanting to continue to study with Amanda as materials are custom-created solely for each student. However, if a student will be gone for 2 weeks or more, discontinuing Format A lessons and contacting Amanda when the student is ready to come back is highly encouraged.
Format B
Format B lessons are live webcam lessons that are scheduled based on availability. If a webcam lesson is scheduled but the student is unable to make it at the day and time that is set, the student will be rescheduled as Format A for that week instead and are allowed to come to one of the Office Hours that are posted for that week.
Billing for Format B is done as each lesson is booked but Amanda needs at least 1 week's notice to discontinue to allow for culminating materials to be made available on the website and to cease billing. With the flexibility to book as desired, notice for discontinuing lessons is appreciated but not required for this format.
If a student will be gone for 2 weeks or more, discontinuing Format B lessons and contacting Amanda when the student is ready to come back is highly encouraged.
Format C or D
Format C and D lessons are solely live webcam lessons that are scheduled weekly at the same day and time to guarantee routine. If the student is unable to make it at the day and time that is set but gives more that 24 hours notice, the student is given the option to use Format A for that week instead with access to Office Hours that week OR reschedule for another day/time that is available that week.
Should a student cancel with less than 24 hours notice they will automatically revert to Format A for the week. Billing for Formats C are weekly so Amanda needs at least 1 week's notice to discontinue to allow for culminating materials to be made available on the website. If less than 1-week's notice is given, students are still billed for the week but are given culminating materials so they can continue practicing on their own before studying with an instructor again.
If a student will be gone for 2 weeks or more, discontinuing Format C or D lessons and contacting Amanda when the student is ready to come back is highly encouraged. However, their day/time will no longer be guaranteed and we will have to find a new one that suits instructor & student availability at that time.
